Loved and Safe are two words that describe Sally’s House for Jared

Sep 29, 2023

Upon performing a safety check on Jared’s home, the police were unable to leave him there due to the bruises on his small body and the condition of the home. Both parents were groggy from the pain pills they were on illegally.

Jared who was only seven years old, was placed at Sally’s House. It was the first time he had been in foster care.

The young boy remained at Sally’s House for three months before entering the first of many foster homes. Over the next two years, Jared moved from placement to placement before residing with relatives in Georgia. After only one month, his relatives said they no longer wanted Jared; leaving this young boy with nowhere to go.

Social workers asked Jared where he would live if he could choose. Without hesitation, he said, “Sally’s House!” Social workers granted his wish. When asked why Sally’s House, Jared said it was the only place he could remember feeling loved and safe.

Jared’s return to Sally’s House was a few days before Christmas, and he couldn’t remember being happy at Christmas in the past. The Sally’s House staff made sure this Christmas would be different.  Much to Jared’s surprise, he and the other children in the house had a stack of gifts to unwrap on Christmas morning! Later, he and his peers enjoyed a delicious Christmas meal.  Needless to say, Jared was overjoyed with this special day!

“He is a bright and caring little boy,” said Becky Hoogstad, manager of Sally’s House. “While we are not his forever home, we were honored to be here for Jared when he needed us most.”
