Homeless teen changes the way staff views its surroundings

Oct 30, 2024

Evangeline's House recently received a youth named Christina who had been living in a van with her family for the past two years. Before that, her family had lived on the streets and occasionally in shelters while working their way across the country.

When her parents were arrested for using drugs in a public parking lot, it was revealed that Christina had been living in an unstable situation and had not eaten in two to three days. Upon arriving at Evangeline's House, Christina was given her own room, bathroom, bed, soft and clean blankets, and the first warm meal she had had in days.

Christina stayed at Evangeline's House for 57 days while social workers found a long-term placement. During that time, she changed the way that the staff viewed its surroundings. Christina had never had anything of her own and took nothing for granted. This young lady had a way of appreciating even the smallest things in a way that made people remember what a blessing they were.

While Evangeline's staff fed her, clothed her, and spent time getting to know this teenager, Christina gave the staff the gift of wonder. A warm bed is a wonderful thing. Nutritious food can feel miraculous. Access to a bathroom can be life changing.  A safe place of your very own can seem like heaven on earth. Getting to serve Christina was a privilege. Getting to see the world through her eyes was an honor that humbled each staff member.
