Family finds refuge twice with The Salvation Army

Dec 31, 2024

Billy and Cathy Ward had just put their lives together after a year-long stay in Stepping Stones, a transitional shelter program operated by The Salvation Army Spokane. They were both employed and living in a small apartment in Spokane. But then the COVID-19 era changed things.

For a while, everything was okay. However, this couple was eventually laid off from their jobs within a couple of months of each other. The Wards weren’t the first nor the last to face this fate. Many businesses had to close their doors; unable to stay afloat during one of the darkest times in history.

With no jobs, and little money to their name, Billy and Cathy, along with their two young sons, were homeless again. They lived with family for a couple of years, finding employment when they could.

One day, the Wards learned that The Salvation Army had a vacancy in its Family Emergency Safe Shelter. Billy stopped by the office and explained their situation. The family was approved to reside at the shelter.

During their temporary stay, The Salvation Army provided a Thanksgiving meal and later found a community sponsor to adopt the Ward family at Christmas. Shortly after the holiday season, Billy and Cathy found good jobs and an apartment.

After years of difficulty, the Wards built their savings and secured a local house. Today, the family is doing well.
