Celebrating Childhood, Restoring Hope
At Sally’s House, our 24-hour foster care program for children ages 2-12, we meet children during some of the most difficult moments of their young lives. Many arrive through emergency placements, often carrying fear, uncertainty, and experiences no child should have to endure.
While our team provides safety, shelter, and care, we also work hard to create moments of joy and normalcy. One of the ways we do that is by celebrating birthdays that happen while children are staying with us.
Thanks to the generosity of our donors, every birthday child receives a small party complete with decorations, cupcakes, and a few gifts chosen just for them. For many children, it is the first birthday celebration they can remember.
Recently, a group of siblings arrived at Sally’s House following an emergency placement. During their stay, one of the children celebrated a birthday. Just days earlier, we had received a donation of several dolls. Among them was one that seemed almost made for this child, with similar features and interests that made an immediate connection.
When the birthday celebration began, the child’s face lit up. The excitement quickly spread to the siblings, who joined in the celebration with smiles, laughter, and the simple joy of being together. What may have seemed like a small party to an outside observer became a powerful reminder that this child was seen, valued, and worthy of celebration.
Stories like this are meaningful because they stand in stark contrast to what many children experience before arriving at Sally’s House.
On another recent morning, our staff welcomed a young child who arrived directly from a hospital after suffering abuse. The previous day had been the child's birthday. Instead of cake, candles, and presents, the day had ended with medical care and uncertainty.
But that story did not end there.
Within hours of arriving at Sally’s House, plans were underway for a birthday celebration. Decorations were hung. Cupcakes were prepared. A gift was wrapped. Staff members gathered to sing "Happy Birthday" and make sure this child knew something important:
YOU MATTER.
YOU ARE PRECIOUS.
YOU ARE LOVED!
No birthday party can erase the pain a child has experienced. It cannot undo trauma or answer every question about what comes next. But it can communicate something every child deserves to hear…that they are valued, cared for, and worthy of kindness.
Every cupcake, every decoration, every gift, and every birthday song is made possible because people in our community choose to support the children of Sally’s House.
Your generosity provides far more than shelter. It creates moments of healing. It restores childhood experiences that many children have never known. And it reminds vulnerable children that even in the midst of crisis, they are not forgotten.
Because every child deserves a birthday.
To protect the privacy and safety of the children in our care, some identifying details in this story have been changed.
