General Volunteer requirements

Mission Statement:  The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church.  Its message is based on the Bible.  Its ministry is motivated by the love of God.  Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.

Preliminary Requirements:

Each volunteer must take the following steps in order to volunteer with The Salvation Army Spokane.

1. Attend a Salvation Army Spokane Orientation
2. Complete initial “Volunteer Welcome Page” with the following information:

• Volunteer Name
• Phone number
• Email Address
• Program Preference (if any)
• Desire to work with children
• Reason for volunteering (General Service, Court Ordered Community service, D.O.C. community service, school required community service, Group event)

3. Complete Volunteer emergency contact page
4. Receive email from our Divisional Headquarters (DHQ) regarding background check
5. Click on the background check link and follow the instructions to complete the fillable PDF.
6. Be sure to click on submit when you’re done.
7. The Background check is reviewed.  If there is a criminal history that needs to be investigated our review board at Divisional Headquarters will decide whether the criminal history disqualifies you from serving.
8. Volunteers are then sent electronic document to sign electronically.  These documents include:

• Code of Ethics for Working with minors
• Policies and Code of Conduct for Social Media Use

9. The Volunteer Coordinator receives an email and counter-signs these documents electronically.
10. Volunteer receives an email from Volunteer Coordinator with link to “Online ‘Protect the Mission’ training.”

• Follow the instructions on the attached page and complete only the modules you need to complete, which for everyone is Know your policies:

Additional Preliminary Requirements for working with children:

1. Provide two references – one professional, one personal.  These people will be called and interviewed.
2. Schedule an interview with the Volunteer Coordinator or A Program Head
3. Complete “Protect the Mission” in-person Training.
4. Complete the online training modules below in addition to “Know Your Policies:”

General Duties/Physical & Knowledge Requirements:

All Volunteers for The Salvation Army Spokane are expected to fulfill the following duties.

• Stand for several hours in a row
• Lift 30 pounds
• Use cleaning materials including various disinfectants, sprays, mops, etc.
• Organize inventory
• Dress appropriately for weather conditions, but always wear close-toed shoes, shirt with sleeves and no clothing with obscenities or endorsement of illicit substances or of a political nature, topic, or tone
• Treat all clients, residents, staff, and guests of The Salvation Army with courtesy and respect regardless of race, gender, religion, or sexual orientation.
• High personal standards of cleanliness and thoroughness
• Understand written information
• Operate a telephone
• Maintain the confidentiality of The Salvation Army guests, clients, staff, and volunteers

General Volunteer Documentation & Training Checklist

All volunteers, serving in all areas of TSA Spokane must complete following Documentation and Training steps

• Attend The Salvation Army Spokane Volunteer Orientation
• Volunteer Welcome Packet (includes Volunteer name, email & phone, Emergency contact information,  & Limited liability waiver)
• Electronic Background Check – Sent by Sterling Inc.
• Execute (sign) The Salvation Army Code of Ethics for Working With Minors – sent electronically from TSA DHQ – executed electronically
• Execute (sign) The Salvation Army Policies and Code of Conduct for Social Media Use - sent electronically from TSA DHQ – executed electronically
• Complete the “Know Your Policies” online Armatus training module
• Send completed certificate for Training modules to Volunteer Coordinator via email.
• Complete “Policy Refreshment” training every 2 years
