Youth Center Ministry Leader/Camp Director

STATUS: EXEMPT

SCOPE OF POSITION: The Youth Center Ministry Leader/Summer Camp Director will be responsible for designing and implementing an efficient Youth Center program (staffing, budgets, after school activities, sports leagues, music, Troop programs, etc.) while maintaining focus on presenting the gospel of Christ and creating a positive experience.  The Youth Center Ministry Leader/Summer Camp Director will be responsible for the year-round supervision of Camp Gifford personnel/volunteers for all functions occurring there. During the Summer months, the Youth Center Ministry Leader/Summer Camp Director will be located at Camp Gifford. They will be responsible to develop the Summer Camping program and to give direction and oversight to staff assigned to deliver a positive Summer Camp experience. The Youth Center Ministry Leader/Summer Camp Director will be the Ministry Leader for all assigned staff, volunteers and participants.

WORK SCHEDULE: Due to the nature of the programs that take place at the Salvation Army, scheduled work hours will be adjusted as program needs require and can change with minimum notice. The employee must consider The Salvation Army (TSA) Spokane their home Corps/church and work in conjunction with the leadership goals of the Corps Officer to see those goals move from objectives to reality. The Employee is expected to attend services every Sunday except those excused due to authorized program activities, vacation or illness.

DRESS CODE:  A uniform will be worn to worship and community services.  Office attire is prescribed in the Employee Handbook. For youth programing attire appropriate for the activity and the employee handbook is authorized.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • 2 years’ experience in Summer Camp administration and/or supervision required
  • AA/BA degree preferred
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in working with children desired
  • Willing to attend Summer Camp management training/development seminars as funding allows.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Understand youth developmental needs
  • Ability to relate to youth and adults in a positive manner
  • Possess a valid Washington State License, pass a vehicle background check; complete TSA driver training
  • Possess a working knowledge of, and give competent instruction in, Salvation Army doctrine
  • Complete Protecting the Mission (PTM) training; enforce necessary Child Safety policies
  • Work independently or with other staff members in a professional manner
  • Plan/implement/evaluate outreach to draw people to Jesus and consider TSA a church home
  • Use TSA office/ministry equipment adequately (i.e. computers, copiers, video projectors, etc.)
  • Possess good time management skills; keep work area organized; timely report completion
  • Current CPR/First Aid Certification
  • Strong use of the English language in verbal and written communication
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and maintain poise under pressure
  • Must obtain a Washington State Boaters Card within 6 months of employment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Attend weekly managers meeting and participate in weekly/monthly Campus staff/house meetings
  • Provide advertisement for inclusion in the reader board, web page and Facebook posts
  • Working knowledge of Office 365, PowerPoint, Access, Word, Excel and TSA computer applications
  • Working knowledge of Facebook, Google Calendar, Sign up genius, and other social media programs
  • Working knowledge of database applications and ability to use new software programs with basic training
  • Work with Advisory Board Summer Camping committee; promote/discuss current and future plans
  • Comply with established policies and procedures in regards to contracts, personnel and budget
  • Type at least 35 wpm
  • Recruit and Manage Volunteers
  • Directly Supervise staff as required by Corps Officer
  • Establish rapport in the Deer/Loon Lake and surrounding areas
    • Promote community relations; market the Camp Gifford availability to the public, groups and organizations
  • Other duties as assigned

Youth Center Ministry Leader (September-May)

  • Supervise Tuesday youth programs ensuring Protecting the Mission policies are being followed
    • Guide and direct Youth Local Officers and volunteers
    • Ensure volunteer applications and PTM training are current and properly stored
    • Ensure youth participant applications and field trip forms are current and properly stored
    • Maintain youth records in Corps Management as required
    • Complete required troop documentation including annual registration and monthly reports
    • Ensure teachers follow prescribed curriculums and turn in reports
    • Provide substitute coverage when teachers are absent
    • Facilitate the children’s movement from class to class
    • Maintain troop uniform inspection readiness, ensuring they remain clean and neat
    • Ensure uniform emblems are sewn on in a timely fashion
  • Engage Summer campers via letters, calls, visits and special events; invite to youth programs
  • Design and implement after-school activities in addition to Tuesday youth programs
  • Design and implement sports program
  • Teach a Sunday School class as assigned
  • Attend YPL and assist leader as assigned
  • Participate in the Spokane Citadel ministry team planning meetings
  • Participate in the planning and lead execution of Spokane Citadel special events
  • Coordinate transportation for Corps Programing participants; provide transportation as assigned
  • Work with Assistant Corps Officer on:
    • Special activities for FRC/Campus guests’ birthdays and holidays with special attention to all Christmas and Easter activities
    • Welcome campus guests with gift baskets, conduct in-home visits/spiritual assessments
    • Implement Movies in the Park program including set-up, family engagement and clean up
  • Participate in Divisional Youth events as assigned by Corps Officer
  • Attend Community meetings as assigned
  • Assist with the Christmas Kettle program, as assigned

Summer Camp Director (June-August)

  • Supervise and manage all staff for the resident summer camping program
    • Conduct Interviews and reference checks on all prospective staff.
    • Initiate background clearance checks on all potential/existing employees without exceptions
    • Hire staff who will represent TSA as a church and uphold Christian Summer Camping program standards
    • Maintain staff morale ensuring an adequate break schedule is provided for all staff members
    • Communicate clearly with staff members before, during and after summer camp
    • Provide guidance and direction with varied schedules of activities for Summer Camper
  • Enforce policies/procedures according to TSA employee handbook and Western Territory procedures
    • Include Human Resources on employee matters to ensure they are handled promptly and professionally
  • Provide staff orientation training communicating TSA standards and manual for Summer Camp staff
    • Provide positive behavior management and PTM training to Summer Campers
    • Train staff on emergency procedures regarding evacuations, fire and potential hazards
    • Ensure staff have required first aid and CPR training and first aid kits and infirmary are properly supplied
  • Find new and innovative programs promoting up-to-date Summer Camping activities for all campers
  • Ensure Summer Campers are adequately supervised and never left alone without proper staff supervision
  • Manage Summer Camper disciplinary concerns:
    • Communicate directly with parents on disciplinary actions; ensure follow-up communication, if necessary
    • Inform the parents and the Spokane Corps Officer of potential harm or danger to staff and/or campers
      • Assess and communicate the seriousness of the situation and possible resolution
    • Discharge campers who disrupt or cause serious danger to other staff and/or campers
    • Ensure all staff, volunteers, and Summer Campers adhere to PTM policies
    • File written camper and staff incident/accident reports for situations that require documentation
  • Follow up with those campers making spiritual decisions at Camp Gifford
  • Supervise Camp Maintenance Director;
    • Ensure facilities are clean and well maintained; report repair/budgeting requests to Spokane Corps Officer
    • Ensure facilities are prepared on time for summer camping and are in good condition at season’s end
  • Maintain a standard of cleanliness in living quarters and with personal hygiene to set a good example

Conference/Group Activities Program

  • Coordinate scheduling for groups to use Camp Gifford facilities from September through May
  • Advertise Camp Gifford availability to groups, churches, non-profits, schools, or businesses
  • Ensure that all participating groups adhere to and follow the camp rules per the Facility Use Agreement
  • Collect the deposits, fees and insurances from groups and submit to the Spokane Corps Officer before use
  • Provide food service and assist groups with their requests while they are at Camp Gifford
  • Schedule retreat hosts and assistants during rental season
  • Investigate any vandalism/damage caused by groups; take necessary steps to pursue restitution
  • Ensure that waterfront is not used without a certified lifeguard

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:   

  • Must be in good physical health and mental health, capable of meeting program demands
  • Participate in child ministry physical activities
  • Sit, move, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist on intermittent or continuous basis
  • Grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead
  • Lift and carry up to 40 pounds

Custodian (1 part time)

Requires skills or experience working with people. Ability to work with minimal supervision and as directed. High personal standards of cleanliness, thoroughness, and attention to detail. Physical ability to satisfactorily complete all tasks in an efficient manner. Must be able to work effectively within the environment of people in crisis. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Adhere to daily check list for cleaning and maintenance of both buildings and grounds as determined by seasons and event schedules 
  • Daily sweeping and mopping of all common areas, offices, lobby, etc. 
  • Vacuum all office spaces and hallways as needed
  • Dust and straighten furnishings as needed 
  • Empty trash receptacles in meeting rooms, warehouse, food bank, offices, labs, break-rooms and restrooms 
  • Clean all restrooms, break-rooms, and Practice Kitchen walls, floors, fixtures and surfaces daily. Stock paper products and soap dispensers 
  • Weekly window cleaning in all spaces of both buildings
  • Keep supplies adequately stocked in the Emergency Family Shelter and Sally’s House janitorial closet. Assist the shelter staff with the proper methods, chemicals and techniques for building custodial duties
  • Assist Shelter staff in maintaining building security and safety
  • Keep building exterior patrolled for trash, cleanliness and repair problems 
  • Report all graffiti, repair problems or hazardous conditions to the Property and Maintenance Coordinator promptly 
  • Perform snow removal and apply de-ice products as needed during working hours. 
  • Strip, wax or burnish ceramic and VCT tiled areas as directed on a periodic basis. 
  • Replace burned out light bulbs as necessary in both buildings.  
  • Operate all necessary cleaning equipment, hand tools and apparatus to perform custodial duties. 
  • Other duties as assigned by the Property and Maintenance Coordinator, Business Administrator, or Commanding Office
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  
  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis 
  • Ability to grasp, push, pull, objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, carts, doors, and reach overhead
    Ability to operate varied maintenance equipment (floor care, snow blower, lawn care equipment)

SALly's House Child Caregivers (Full Time, Part time and Extra On-Call Positions)

Caregivers working in Sally's House are caring for children in emergency situations for children 2 to 12 years of age that are removed from their home due to abuse, neglect, abandonment or criminal activity. They provide a caring, safe and loving home for up to 20 children at one time.  

Candidates should be at least 21 years of age. Minimum of 12 Months of paid/volunteer experience caring for or supervising children. Must have a high school diploma or GED.  Additional education in the field is preferred. Must be able to successfully pass a DSHS and Salvation Army criminal history background check.

 

Early Childhood ministry attendant (Part-Time, Extra On-Call as needed)

SCOPE OF POSITION: Care for Children in the Nursery during Corps services.  

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:

  • Supervision of children at all times.
  • Provide a safe and pleasant environment for the children.
  • Provide organized games, stories, crafts as time or number of children allows.
  • Inventory and maintain Nursery supplies. Let the Corps Officer know when supplies are needed.
  • Change soiled linens as needed. Place soiled linens in a plastic garbage bag and give to the Corps Officer to be cleaned.
  • Sanitize toys once a month.
  • Feed and change babies/toddlers as needed.
  • Maintain neat and orderly Nursery and rooms. (I.E. pick up all toys, put away all craft projects, clear and wipe all tables, if needed)
  • The age group for children to be in the Nursery is 0-4 years. Older children age 5 and older should not be in the Nursery unless they have permission to be there. Children age 3-4 can be excused to attend Junior Church if they have one scheduled for that Sunday.
  • Please do not let children leave the Nursery until Parents or the person who they came with comes to pick them up. Children should not be allowed to leave the Nursery by themselves under any circumstances.
